JOB TITLE:

Deputy Vice President, Research & Innovation

JOB PURPOSE:

The Research and Economic Development Division (REDD) at UW is responsible for enhancing and overseeing $150 million research expenditures through research development, pre-award services, research compliance and research translation activities. It fosters and administers research and innovation across the campus. In addition, many interdisciplinary research centers and institutes report to the Division. The Vice President for Research and Economic Development and the Deputy Vice President for REDD will function as a team to oversee all units and functions of the Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In close collaboration with, and under the guidance of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, the Deputy Vice President is responsible for fostering and administering research and innovation across the campus. The Deputy Vice President:

  • Is responsible for the strategic planning to enhance the UW research enterprise, including research administration and the translation of UW research to economic and social impacts.
  • Will achieve measurable contributions to research development and administration functions, develop new campus-wide priorities and provide leadership of new initiatives to apply for extramural funding, streamline business operations through continuous improvements, implement measures of accountability, foster campus innovation culture and commercialization of the UW IP portfolio, and communicate research and innovation outcomes.
  • Provides administrative oversight of all contracts and grants pre-award services, award set-up and non-financial post-award research administration. This includes supervising unit Directors that serve as the Authorized Organizational Representative; approve indirect cost reduction/waiver requests, pre-award spending requests and other pre-award functions; oversee the compliance areas of human subjects' research, animal care and use, radiation safety, biosafety, drones, research misconduct, responsible conduct of research, conflict of interest, and foreign influence; provides oversight for the technology transfer, entrepreneurship, startup incubator and accelerator, industrial and other partnerships, and innovation units.
  • Will collaborate with other leaders in the Division and President's cabinet ensuring seamless transition of research to innovation and economic development.
  • Will participate in the campus-wide development and articulation of UW priorities for research and innovation, promoting partnerships across disciplines and relations with external stakeholders, including businesses and foundations.
  • Will work with other UW offices and faculty to promote integration of research and innovation with the education of UW's students and workforce development for current and emerging Wyoming industries.
  • Develops and maintains strategically directed, scalable, efficient research administration, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer teams, promoting a culture of high performance and continuous process improvement.
  • Provides leadership and guidance in establishing and maintaining an appropriate infrastructure for the research enterprise, including pre-award services, research compliance, technology transfer and entrepreneurship.
  • Directly or through staff, will promote efforts to improve and simplify research administration and innovation procedures and provide ongoing oversight.
  • Develops, implements and maintains standard operating procedures and policies for all aspects of research administration, technology transfer and start up incubation.
  • Ensures research administration facilitates faculty research while monitoring project activity and ensures that all project activities comply with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Is responsible for research data and/or statistical reports for federal and state agencies as needed.
  • Remains current in research administration policies and procedures and renders recommendations regarding policies and procedures pertaining to research administration.
  • Will remain current on federal contract and grant requirements as well as national priorities in translational research and innovation.
  • Will supervise Directors of Pre-Award Services, Research Compliance, Technology Transfer office, IMPACT 307, and other units as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master's Degree

Experience: 15 years of progressively increasing responsibilities in administering research grants and contracts or technology transfer-based innovation or both

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Significant relevant experience in research administration and innovation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and conflict resolution skills.
  • 5 or more years of experience of increasing research, translational activities or industry collaborations at a university.
  • Demonstrable experience in enhancing university revenues through grants, contracts, licensing fees or other means.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent.
  • Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) designation.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead teams of highly trained and motivated professionals (and faculty if appropriate) in supporting research translation and startup companies emerging from university.
  • A demonstrated ability to function in an executive team with shared responsibilities of a broad portfolio of functions and priorities.
  • Leadership positions in relevant professional societies at the national scale.
